Our Favorite Plant-Based Meats

Caught between saving the Earth and finding a some plant-based meat alternatives? You’re not alone. 

This isn’t a solo mission. We’ve tried tons of them and we’re here to help narrow your search. Meat made with plant-based ingredients instead of animal meat have surged in the grocery stores, fast food chains, or your favorite coffee shop. Dunkin’s – Beyond Sausage Sandwich introduced their Beyond Meat breakfast sandwich in August of 2019 and hasn’t looked back. Carl’s Jr., the restaurant who famously had stars chomping down on their meaty products got in the game recently, too. 

The newest plant-based items can be found, conveniently, in your local meat aisle… that’s right. Taking real-estate from brands we’d rather not name for legal purposes. 

Have you or a friend turned “flexitarian”?

Do you have one-shoe in but can’t fully turn over? How about these shocking stats: the average American ate 222.4 pounds of red meat in 2018 (2.4 burgers in a day). Yikes. Research from the U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services found that a higher dose of red meat in your diet includes an increased risk of colorectal cancer, heart disease, cardiovascular disease, obesity and high cholesterol levels. Processed meat contains higher levels of sodium, which may lead to type-2 diabetes and increased risk of coronary heart disease. 

If you take the leap over to plant-based protein sources, you can increase your life expectancy.

We listed a few of our favorites below:


Formerly know as "Tempeh Works", founded in 1979, for 40 years, they now offer a wide selection of products from Burgers, Dogs, Tempeh, Ground, Breakfast, Sausages, Deli & Chicken. We dug in to their recipe book and found a favorite in "The Pesto's Yet to Come" burger. This recipe took us a little under 45 minutes to cook and our guests (pre-covid) couldn't get enough. After a few cocktails, we even started the next vacation day with their breakfast links and a plant based scramble. Plenty of protein, great texture, and (we met the staff at food convention in 2020) great employees in their organization!


As mentioned above, it seems like every one is picking up on a plant-based option. Even KFC is launching their KFC Beyond Fried Chicken to the market. Beyond uses a variety of plant-protein: Pea, Mung Bean, Faba Bean, & Brown rice. By heating, cooling, pressurizing, and mixing, they landed on a texture that truly mimics a meat experience with zero guilt. This stuff, like the others, sears extremely well and I've been able to trick some guests into eating this "new meat" I "found" from my "local butcher". Every burger counts. 

Before The Butcher - Uncut

Just launching nationally, Uncut gives a variety of options from Turkey Burgers, Chicken Burgers, and your good old fashioned Patties. Surprisingly enough, we liked? ... the PB&J Burger. Yeah, just make it and tell me in the comments how long you pursed your lips before getting that sweet tangy shock to your tastebuds. We really enjoyed their meatball recipe on their youtube channel. We paired that up with Mia's Kitchen Garlic & Onion Pasta Sauce and threw in some elbows with Banza's Chickpea Noodles

Field Roast

We couldn't believe how they packed in so much flavor into these sausages. You can whip up quick Soft Flour Tacos with Spicy Chipotle Sausage so fast, you'll wonder why you hadn't made the switch earlier. Get cozy with this next recipe and wow your significant other with their Sweet Smoked Apple & Sage Sausages with Roasted Vegetables. Field Roast also got into the cheese game, which pairs extremely well with the cooked sausage and diversifies their product line.
